Shaq To Sign With Celtics

Shaq
According to Chris Broussard, Shaquille O’Neal will sign with the Boston Celtics. O’Neal had been a free agent after his $21 million dollar expiring contract ended this summer. The Celtics will be his 4th team in 4 years.

O’Neal last played for the Cleveland Cavaliers who were title contenders before LeBron James signed with the Miami Heat. While his plan to “win a ring for the king” eventually failed, O’Neal did have a productive season for the Cavs before injuring his thumb late in the season. He averaged 12 points and 6 rebounds on the season in 23 minutes per game, although his stats fell during the playoffs.

O’Neal joins a Celtics squad coming off a Game 7 loss in the NBA Finals to the L.A. Lakers. One reason they lost was the absence of starting center Kendrick Perkins, who went down with a knee injury early on in Game 6. To replace his production, along with the soon-to-be retired Rasheed Wallace, the Celtics signed Jermaine O’Neal and are close to adding Shaquille O’Neal as well.

While there were some concerns regarding O’Neal health, defensive liabilities, role, and desire for a large 2 year deal, O’Neal was arguable the best big man available to the Celtics considering their lack of cap space.

According to Black Sports Online, O’Neal will sign a 2 year deal worth $1.7 million annually, which is far below his supposed asking price of $5.8 million.

Update: Cavs Close To Trading For Ramon Sessions

July 26th, 7:10 PM CT, Update: Bob Finnan of the Cleveland News-Herald says that Sebastian Telfair will also be included in the deal, giving Minnesota another point guard to have on the roster just in-case something happens to Flynn or Ridnour. Finnan also says the Cavs will receive a second round pick in 2013.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are close to completing a deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves for Ramon Sessions, according to Brian Windhorst of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Cleveland would also receive reserve center Ryan Hollins in return for Delonte West.

According to multiple league sources, the Cavs have entered advanced talks with the Minnesota Timberwolves for guard Ramon Sessions. It is likely a deal will involve Delonte West, who has been shopped by the team for the last several months because his contract is not guaranteed for next season — which makes him an attractive asset.

Obviously, point guard is a position that the T’Wolves are set at for years to come and Session’s services were no longer necessary. Jonny Flynn, Luke Ridnour and Ricky Rubio are all classified as Minnesota point guards though Rubio has not come over from Europe.

The Timberwolves will likely waive Delonte West as soon as the trade becomes official which will save them about $4.1 million as only $500,000 of his $4.6 million contract is guaranteed if he is waived prior to August 5th.

Clearly there is no right move for Cleveland to make this off-season that will make up for what they lost in LeBron James, but adding Sessions, a six-foot-three point guard that can also play some two, is a nice addition for Byron Scott and his uptemp offense.

Cavs’ Owner Dan Gilbert Slams LeBron James

Cleveland Cavaliers Owner Dan Gilbert has released an intense letter to the Cleveland Fans. Here it is:

Dear Cleveland, All Of Northeast Ohio and Cleveland Cavaliers Supporters Wherever You May Be Tonight;

As you now know, our former hero, who grew up in the very region that he deserted this evening, is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier.

This was announced with a several day, narcissistic, self-promotional build-up culminating with a national TV special of his “decision” unlike anything ever “witnessed” in the history of sports and probably the history of entertainment.

Clearly, this is bitterly disappointing to all of us.

The good news is that the ownership team and the rest of the hard-working, loyal, and driven staff over here at your hometown Cavaliers have not betrayed you nor NEVER will betray you.

There is so much more to tell you about the events of the recent past and our more than exciting future. Over the next several days and weeks, we will be communicating much of that to you.

You simply don’t deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal.

You have given so much and deserve so much more.

In the meantime, I want to make one statement to you tonight:

“I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER ‘KING’ WINS ONE”

You can take it to the bank.

If you thought we were motivated before tonight to bring the hardware to Cleveland, I can tell you that this shameful display of selfishness and betrayal by one of our very own has shifted our “motivation” to previously unknown and previously never experienced levels.

Some people think they should go to heaven but NOT have to die to get there.

Sorry, but that’s simply not how it works.

This shocking act of disloyalty from our home grown “chosen one” sends the exact opposite lesson of what we would want our children to learn. And “who” we would want them to grow-up to become.

But the good news is that this heartless and callous action can only serve as the antidote to the so-called “curse” on Cleveland, Ohio.

The self-declared former “King” will be taking the “curse” with him down south. And until he does “right” by Cleveland and Ohio, James (and the town where he plays) will unfortunately own this dreaded spell and bad karma.

Just watch.

Sleep well, Cleveland.

Tomorrow is a new and much brighter day….

I PROMISE you that our energy, focus, capital, knowledge and experience will be directed at one thing and one thing only:

DELIVERING YOU the championship you have long deserved and is long overdue….

Dan Gilbert
Majority Owner

Cleveland is Confident LeBron Will Remain a Cav

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports is reporting that the Cleveland Cavaliers are “confident” that LeBron James will be a Cav next season.

Wojnarowski says any chances of a sign and trade with Toronto that would involve Chris Bosh is out of the question because Bosh does not want to play in Cleveland.

Alex Kennedy of HOOPSWORLD said LeBron was leaning towards the Knicks less than an hour ago but there seems to be something LeBron has done or said that has encouraged Cleveland’s front office.
