Shaq To Sign With Celtics

Shaq
According to Chris Broussard, Shaquille O’Neal will sign with the Boston Celtics. O’Neal had been a free agent after his $21 million dollar expiring contract ended this summer. The Celtics will be his 4th team in 4 years.

O’Neal last played for the Cleveland Cavaliers who were title contenders before LeBron James signed with the Miami Heat. While his plan to “win a ring for the king” eventually failed, O’Neal did have a productive season for the Cavs before injuring his thumb late in the season. He averaged 12 points and 6 rebounds on the season in 23 minutes per game, although his stats fell during the playoffs.

O’Neal joins a Celtics squad coming off a Game 7 loss in the NBA Finals to the L.A. Lakers. One reason they lost was the absence of starting center Kendrick Perkins, who went down with a knee injury early on in Game 6. To replace his production, along with the soon-to-be retired Rasheed Wallace, the Celtics signed Jermaine O’Neal and are close to adding Shaquille O’Neal as well.

While there were some concerns regarding O’Neal health, defensive liabilities, role, and desire for a large 2 year deal, O’Neal was arguable the best big man available to the Celtics considering their lack of cap space.

According to Black Sports Online, O’Neal will sign a 2 year deal worth $1.7 million annually, which is far below his supposed asking price of $5.8 million.

Source: Celtics Out Of The Running For Fernandez, Knicks In Lead

The Boston Celtics are no longer looking to acquire sharpshooter Rudy Fernandez from the Portland Trail Blazers, according to a source close to the situation. Boston agreed to a deal with Von Wafer earlier today, according to Alex Kennedy of HOOPSWORLD, and our source says that means the C’s are done making moves at the shooting guard/small forward spot.

The source also told NBA News and Rumors that the New York Knicks are the favorites to land Fernandez at this point in time. Rudy is a perfect fit in Mike D’Antoni’s fast paced, three-point heavy offense and isn’t a bad athlete either.

The Bulls are still talking to Portland about Rudy but nothing has materialized as of yet, says the source.

Celtics Sign Von Wafer

The Boston Celtics have signed Von Wafer to a one-year minimum contract, according to Alex Kennedy of HOOPSWORLD.

The Boston Celtics have signed Von Wafer to a one-year minimum deal, according to sources close to the situation.

Wafer was an offensive spark off the bench with the Rockets but had issues with the coaching staff and had some character issues. Defensively, he isn’t comparable to Tony Allen but that will be his role, backing up Ray Allen and defending some of the opposition’s better perimeter options.

Nate Robinson To Resign With Celtics

Nate RobinsonAccording to Marc Spears of Yahoo! Sports, free agent guard Nate Robinson will resign with the Boston Celtics.

Robinson was acquired by Boston this past February that sent fan favorite Eddie House to the New York Knicks. The scoring guard did not play much in the regular season for the Celtics as he averaged a career low 14 minutes per game with Boston. This trend continued in the playoffs as Robinson played just 7.5 minutes per game. However, in Game 5 of the NBA Finals vs. the Lakers, Robinson went off for 12 points as he and Glen Davis led the Celtics to a victory.

The fan favorite expressed his desire to resign with the Celtics, despite seeing limited playing time and averaging just 6.5 points per game, 2.0 assists per game, and 1.5 rebounds per game while with Boston.

Update: According to various Celtics blogs, Robinson’s new deal is worth $8 million over two years. Robinson’s deal now gives the Celtics over $41 million in expiring contracts during the lockout year (2011-2012) (Garnett, Allen, O’Neal, Robinson)  (H/T @celticsblog).

Jermaine O’Neal To Sign With The Boston Celtics

Free agent center Jermaine O’Neal has agreed to a deal with the Boston Celtics, according to Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski.

O’Neal was massively overpaid a total of $23 million last season, is 31-years old and has a history of injury issues but O’Neal can still be successful in the league. O’Neal is no longer a 20/10 guy but he still averaged 14 points, seven rebounds and a block per game with the Heat last season in 70 games played.

O’Neal should be able to start for the Celtics to start the season and maintain the job until Kendrick Perkins returns from his injury.

Ray Allen Agrees to Re-Sign with Boston

Ray Allen has agreed to a two-year, $20 million extension with the Boston Celtics, according to ESPN’s Marc Stein. Allen can opt out after next season.

Allen was thought to be a major piece in the LeBron/Wade sweepstakes as both guys have lacked a sharpshooter at their side during their careers and having him on the wing with all of the drive and kicks they produce would be extremely beneficial.

Celtics To Meet With Kwame Brown

Kwame BrownAccording to the Boston Herald, the Boston Celtics are reportedly meeting with free agent center Kwame Brown.  Coach Doc Rivers and General Manager Danny Ainge will meet with the former number one overall pick (2001 draft) tomorrow in Orlando. Considering that Bostons’ frontline now consists ofGlen Davis, an injured Kendrick Perkins (possibly out until December), and an aging Kevin Garnett, the Celtics desperately need some big bodies in the paint. Rasheed Wallace’s impeding retirement along with Shelden Williams’ assumed departure via free agency leave the Celtics with virtually no one on the roster able to play the center position.

The Herald quotes Ainge as saying that:

“We’re checking out a lot of possibilities – it’s still very early in the process,” Danny Ainge said today of what is certain to be a broad casting call for big men, including Shaquille O’Neal.

Brown was with the Detroit Pistons the past two seasons where he served primarily as a backup. Although he played sporadic minutes (just 13.8 minutes per  game in 48 appearances last season) for a Detroit team that was sorely lacking in the big man department, Brown could still have value as a placeholder until Perkins is ready to play. His value lies in his low post presence where he’s a large, but athletic body that provides above average defense. Just don’t count on him for any offense (career 6.7 ppg), although the same could be said of Perkins (career 6.4 ppg).

If Brown does sign with the Celtics, look for something similar to a 2 year, $6 million deal. But don’t expect Brown to play much after Perkins is cleared, or if Boston acquires another big man with the expiring contract of Rasheed Wallace.

Lawrence Frank and Doc Rivers Spend Time Together in Orlando

Lawrence Frank, who was fired from his head coaching job in New Jersey last season after a 0-16 start, spent a lot of time with Doc Rivers today in Orlando. Rumors that Rivers was after Frank to join his coaching staff have been circulating for two weeks.

During the Boston Celtics’ NBA Summer League game today against the Philadelphia 76ers, the NBATV cameras focused on Doc and Frank chatting as they watched several times.

FanHouse’s Chris Tomasson tweeted the following after the game was completed:

Doc Rivers & Lawrence Frank left Orlando Summer League together in same car Celtics looking at Frank for assistant’s job replacing Thibodeau

No official decision has been made but these are pretty strong indications that Frank is likely to join Rivers’ staff for the 2010-2011 NBA season, which may be the last of Rivers’ coaching career.
